Old, eyesore Nerang sign must be repaired |
|
A DILAPIDATED old and rusty sign in Nerang portraying a negative image of the area has been the subject of many local complaints, according to Gaven MP Alex Douglas.
Dr Douglas asked the Main Roads Minister in Parliament to restore the use of the sign at the intersection of Gilston Road and Cayuga Road, to improve residential amenity.
"Locals complain that the sign undermines the image of the whole area, stating that the rusty sign with irregular frames hanging off the structure is a total eyesore," he said.
"The State government and Council have been passing the responsibility backwards and forwards for too long now: residents just want something to be done.
"Because the Council deem the structure compliant to safety regulations the Council state they cannot do anything and the issue of approving advertising on the sign lies with the responsibility of the State government," he said.
"I call on the Minister to approve advertising on the structure to ensure that the sign is repaired and residential amenity restored." |

Alex and residents - hit by number plate theft epidemic
AN EPIDEMIC of number plate thefts has hit the Gold Coast as thieves use number plates to evade identification to steal petrol and avoid paying tolls.
Gaven MP Alex Douglas, who had his rear number plate stolen recently, said of only those incidents reported on average one set of number plates were stolen each day in every police district.
"At the moment Queensland Transport does not record whether the plates have been stolen and can optionally replace an owner's plates with the same number plates. This means the thief continues to use that number and this continues the confusion of identity," he said.
"If a number plate is stolen, vehicle owners must report the plate as stolen to the police and then obtain new replacement number plates at Queensland Transport.
"I am calling on the Transport Minister to ensure Queensland Transport records the plate number and police report number if they are stolen so that they cannot be used again by a legitimate owner. The Minister must also mandate that new plates rather than replacement plates are issued.
"This theft not only costs owners $24.30 for a new set of plates but sometimes owners will have to sign a number of statutory declarations to explain why their vehicle was not responsible for the theft or toll...more |
